Espolòn Tequila’s 2024 Limited Edition “Flor de Oro” is a vibrant celebration of Dia de los Muertos, a traditional Mexican holiday that honors the memories of those who have passed while reveling in life. Our process was guided by the philosophy that Dia de los Muertos, though rooted in death, is far from somber. It is a vibrant celebration—joyful and full of life. And for this occasion, the brand is releasing a limited edition liquid, infused with the essence of Cempasuchil—the marigold flower that guides spirits back to their loved ones.
Espolòn commissioned us with bringing this rich cultural moment to life through the limited edition packaging design, and our approach sought to blend the festival’s colorful and vivid energy with Espolòn’s boldness and grit.
The marigold, or Cempasuchil, takes center stage, its bright orange hue takes over the bottle in a glow that speaks to both heritage and modern vibrancy. Embracing the iconic Guadalupe Posada illustration style, and in close collaboration with Steven Nobel, artist and illustrator of original Espolòn illustrations, the new pack celebrates the beautiful ofrenda scene, which captures the festive spirit of Dia de los Muertos while paying tribute to its deeper meaning—bridging the gap between life and the afterlife.
Within the bottle, the marigold-infused Reposado tells its own story. Rested in oak barrels, the tequila offers a rich flavor profile where sweet notes of roasted agave and vanilla are beautifully balanced by the bitter floral essence of marigold, cocoa nibs, and a touch of cinnamon. Crafted for sipping, this tequila offers a sensory journey that reflects the harmony of tradition and modernity—perfect for those looking to honor the rich cultural heritage of Dia de los Muertos with every sip.
